About the Nodes

Marketing Automation Nodes

The nodes contain all the actions and decisions in which the profiles in the flow will participate once they reach the node. There's several nodes that will allow you to create very specific and tailored scenarios according to how the profiles are performing with your flow.

Adding a Node

How to Add a Node

The listen node is always present in every Marketing Automation flow and it cannot be removed. So, if you want to add your first node, you will be adding it from the Listen node. The process is the same for all nodes.

To add a new node, click the plus sign (+) on the bottom of any of the nodes.

Choose between Channels, Actions or Integrations and select a node from the list.

Editing a Node

How to Edit a Node

To edit a node, simply locate the node you wish to edit and click the Edit button.

Don't forget to save your changes!

Deleting a Node

If you delete a node in a paused Marketing Automation flow, all Profiles currently present in the node will be removed from the flow. This will be reflected as an event on those Profiles under Response Data. This cannot be undone.

Removed profiles will still be shown as a part of the statistics in the Marketing Automation Report.

 

How to Delete a Node

To delete a node, you must locate the Delete button.

For most nodes, you will have to first click Edit.

To connect a node, click on the plus sign (+) of the first node and draw a line to the node you want to connect it with.

To disconnect a node, click the minus sign (-) on the line that connects the two nodes.

Disconnected Nodes

About Disconnected Nodes

Make sure that all nodes are connected. If nodes are disconnected, profiles will not move from one node to the other. Some nodes don't need to be connected to another, though, like the Email or Achievement node whenever placed at the end of the flow. Disconnected nodes count as incomplete nodes. See Incomplete Nodes below.

To connect a node, click on the plus sign (+) of the first node and draw a line to the node you want to connect it with.

Incomplete Nodes

About Incomplete Nodes in a Marketing Automation Flow

It's not possible to activate a flow that contains incomplete nodes. Disconnected nodes count as incomplete. Whenever you try to activate an incomplete flow, you will see the following warning:

You may either complete or delete the incomplete nodes. To see the incomplete nodes, click Show nodes.

By clicking on the arrows, you may toggle between all incomplete nodes, which will be highlighted in red.

You may also delete the nodes you don't think are necessary in order to activate your flow. To learn more about how to delete a node, expand Deleting a Node above.

 

 


 

Listen Node

The listen node is the most important node in your marketing automation flow.

It will listen for the profiles in order to bring them into the flow. As profiles join your Audience, perform any actions, enter a segment, etc., they may come into your flow depending on your settings.

Attributes

With the Listen node, you can bring profiles into the flow by listening for their attributes.

The node will bring profiles into the flow whenever they match the attribute you selected, but you may choose an exact timing for them to enter the flow. Read more about attributes...

To allow profiles to enter the flow according to an attribute, first choose an attribute from the drop-down menu. The Listen node supports both default and custom attributes.

Depending on the type of attribute, the configuration will vary. First name, last name, email address, country, etc. are good examples of text attributes. Mobile and postcode are number attributes, while date of birth is a date attribute. If you would like to read more about attributes, head over to this article.

Text

1. Choose a text attribute from the drop-down menu.

Equals: The value equals that which you input in the value field. For example, First Name equals "Johanna".

Not Equals: The value does not equal that which you input in the value field. For example, First Name ≠ Johanna.

Contains: The value contains that which you input in the value field. For example: Birthdate contains "1993".

Starts with: The value starts with that which you input in the value field. For example, Last Name starts with "J".

Ends with: The value ends with that which you input in the value field. For example, Last Name ends with "N".

Regex: This is used for regular expressions, which is a sequence of characters used to define a search pattern. However, using regular expressions is an advanced skill that requires background knowledge. Please refer to your development team, or consult a reference guide of your choice.

Date

1. Choose a date attribute from the drop-down menu.

2. Choose when to bring profiles into the flow.

Select a number of days, weeks, months of years before or after the date attribute for profiles to enter the flow.

To bring profiles into the flow the exact date in the attribute, choose Today.

3. Under At, select a specific time to bring profiles into the flow from the drop-down menu.

4. If you would like profiles to enter this flow every year, leave the Repeat every year box ticked.

Otherwise, untick the box for profiles to only enter this flow during the current year.

5. Click Save.

Tags

With the Listen node, you can bring profiles into the flow by listening for tags.

The node will bring profiles into the flow according to a tag, but you may choose an exact timing for them to enter the flow.

To allow profiles to enter the flow according to a tag, you must first decide whether you want to bring profiles into the flow based on whether they do or do not have a tag.

The procedure for listening for profiles tagged and not tagged is the same.

To bring the profiles that contain a tag into this flow, add a tag under Profiles tagged.

To bring the profiles that do not contain a tag into this flow, add a tag under Profiles not tagged.

 

1. Depending on whether you want the profiles to match all or any of the following tags, select an option from the drop-down menu. You may do this at any point while you edit the Listen node.

2. Click on the drop-down menu to select a tag previously created.

3. To add multiple tags, repeat the process above.

 

4. To create a new tag, click Create new tag on the drop-down menu.

5. Enter the new tag name.

To save the tag, click Save. Otherwise, Cancel.

6. To remove a tag, click on the "x" icon on the tag.

Events

With the Listen node, you can bring profiles into the flow by listening for events.

The node will bring profiles into the flow whenever they perform an action that matches the event you selected, in real time.

Click on an icon to choose a source for the event:

Choose between Signup bar, Email, Cookie banner and Auto-Collect events

1. Click on the Activity name drop-down and select an activity from the list.

2. Expand the Listen for drop-down menu and choose an event.

Segments

With the Listen node, you can bring profiles into the flow by listening for segments.

The node will bring profiles into the flow whenever they match the segment you selected, but you may choose an exact timing for them to enter the flow.

Note that, once you select a segment for your Listen node and save it, the Listen node will save the segment as it is in that moment. If you later edit the segment, the segment in the Listen node will not be updated. You would have to return to the flow and choose the segment again.

To allow profiles to enter the flow according to a segment, you must first decide whether you want to bring profiles into the flow based on whether they do or do not match a segment.

The procedure for both including and excluding segments is the same.

To bring the profiles that match a segment into this flow, add an included segment under Segment match.

To bring the profiles that do not match a segment into this flow, add an excluded segment under Not a segment match.

1. Depending on whether you want the profiles to match all or any of the following segments, select an option from the drop-down menu. You may do this at any point while you edit the Listen node.

2. Click on the segment container and select a segment from the list.

3. To add another segment, click Add included segment or Add excluded segment and repeat the steps described above.

4. To remove a segment, click on the "x" icon at the right end of the segment container.

5. Under At, select a specific time to bring profiles into the flow from the drop-down menu.

Channels 

Channel nodes allow you to send a message to the profiles in the Marketing Automation flow via the different channels that they provided consent for.

Here's some practical information about working with Channel nodes.

Click Create an Email to create a new email from a blank or custom template.

Actions

Action nodes allow you to add directions for the Marketing Automation flow to follow, as well as perform specific actions before, after or in between other nodes.

Here's some practical information about working with Action nodes.

Timer

The timer node puts profiles on hold during a specific period of time before they move onto the next node.

There are three timer settings:

Countdown

This timer setting allows you to choose a period of time for profiles to wait.

Choose between 1 to 10 hours, days, weeks and months and a specific time for profiles to proceed to the next node.

Specific time

This timer setting specifies exactly at which time and day of the week the profiles will proceed to the next node.

Choose a specific time and day(s) of the week.

Time frame 

This timer setting pauses profiles for a period of time of your choice, depending also on the day of the week, before they're allowed to proceed to the next node.

Choose a start and a finish for the time range. You may add as many time ranges as you want by clicking Add new time range.

Split Node

The Split node divides the profiles into 2, 3 or 4 different paths. It makes it possible to have different pathways for profiles to follow and diversify the flow's general strategy.

Number of paths

Choose between 2, 3 or 4 paths by clicking the corresponding button.

Split type

Currently, the split node can split profiles with an even proportion, or a custom condition.

Click on the drop-down menu and choose between Even or Custom.

With the custom split you can divide the profiles by a percentage or by a specific amount.

Use the sliders for each path until you reach the desired proportion, or enter the numeric amount of profiles to take either path.

End Node

The End node signals an end to a specific path in a flow and assigns a value to each profile that ends the flow.

Click Edit to see the node settings.

Any flow without an End node still ends whenever profiles reach the last node, however, the End node allows users to include information about the estimated profit or value that is assigned to each profile upon completing the flow.

Enter a value under Edit estimated value.

Profile Update Node

This node will update a profile's tag or attribute value. It is particularly handy for tagging profiles after a specific logic, or even adding a new attribute value.

Click Edit to set up the node.

Update Attributes

1. On the left side, click Attributes.

2. Select an attribute from the drop-down menu.

The node supports both default and custom attributes. Different types of attributes may require a specific type of value later on.

3. Expand the value drop-down menu and choose between Set or Clear.

Set will add a value to a the chosen attribute of the profile that reaches the node.

Clear will remove the existing value from the profile that reaches the node.

4. If you chose Set, enter a value for the attribute.

5. Done? Click Save.

Update Tags

1. Choose whether you'd like to add a tag, remove a tag, or both.

Continue this procedure under Add to Profile and/or Remove from Profile.

2. Expand the tag drop-down menu and choose an existing tag.

3. To create a new tag, click Create new tag.

4. Enter a tag name.

5. When done, click Save. Otherwise, Cancel.

5. To remove a tag, click on the "x" icon.

6. When done, click Save on the Update Profile node.

Profile Check Node

The Profile Check node will check the profiles that enter the node to see if they have a specific attribute or tag, or if they belong to a segment of your choice.

It works just the same as the Listen node. We suggest that you read the Listen node section above to get acquainted with the process, if you haven't yet.

 

Achievement Node

Whenever profiles reach this node, a specific achievement will be assigned to them. This achievement will be added to the profile, and can be used in the future to create segments, personalise emails and customise other marketing automation flows.

Set Up Achievement Node

1. Click Edit.

2. Click on the Select achievement drop-down menu to see the available achievements.

3. If you have previously created one, you can simply search for and select an existing achievement.

4. After you've chosen your achievement, click Save.

Creating an Achievement

1. Enter a name for the achievement.

2. Expand the drop-down menu and choose between SQL, MQL and PQL.

3. Enter the Achievement points. These points will be added to the profiles upon reaching the node, and can be used to keep track of the performance of your Marketing Automation flows.

4. Enter a numeric value that represents the revenue associated with reaching this node under Achievement value.

5. Click Save to save and set up your achievement.
