Creating an Asset

How to Create an Asset

Continue reading this article for in-depth instructions on how to successfully create your first Asset.

There are two ways to create Assets. Either create Assets for your Email activities by saving a Row as an Asset, or go to the Assets tab in the Email tool create and edit your Asset and add more Rows if necessary.

If you're after a guide on how to use the Email Editor, take a look at the Email Editor section.

Name

This is the very first step of the Conversation Wizard. All fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory. Let's get started!

1. Enter a working name for your Asset. This name is only for internal purposes.

2. Click Next.

Type

1. Choose a type of Asset

Static Assets: The content is static, and looks exactly the same every time you use this Asset in your Email tool activities.

Dynamic Assets: These Assets are created and designed as regular Assets, but contain placeholders that are replaced with the data contained in your own, external source (JSON or XML). When adding these Assets into the Email Editor's Canvas, you must enter a source URL for the Email Editor to replace the placeholders with the information in your own source.

2. The Email Editor will open. Time to build your Asset on the Design step!

If you want some detailed information on how to work with the Email Editor, head over here.

Design

After choosing a type of Asset, you will enter the Email Editor.

Take a look at our articles about the Email Editor for more detailed information.

Certain browser extensions may interfere with the Email Editor. In that case, disable your browser extensions and refresh the page.

The Email Editor in a nutshell:

The centre of the Editor is called the Canvas. It looks like a live preview of your Email, which takes shape as you put the Elements together.

To design your Email you will use Elements and Assets. These are contained in the Design Panel, on the right, ready to be dragged and dropped into the Canvas!

As Emails are built, the structure of the Email is shown on the left in order to keep track of things, and edit the settings of the rows and columns created. This area is called the Structure Panel.

Don't forget about the Bottom bar! There you will see useful options like Asset Settings and Preview.

1. Create your Asset by interacting with the Email Editor: drag and drop Elements and Assets from the Design Panel into the Canvas.

Need a rundown of all the Elements and the Design Panel? Jump here.

2. If you're creating a Dynamic Asset, it's time to add the placeholders!

These can be added into all Elements, like inside a Text Element, as the URL for an Image Element, or the link inside an Element: Simply type it in!

About Placeholders

When creating a Dynamic Asset, you must add placeholders in your Asset so that they're replaced with the data from your source (JSON or XML).

Although you won't be able to see this data when creating the Asset, it will be visible once you add the Asset into the Canvas in an Email draft. Read more about Working with Assets.

Placeholders can only be edited when editing the Asset directly from the Assets tab. Any changes made in the Email draft after adding the Asset will only affect that specific Email activity.

Placeholders must be formatted as: {{placeholder}}

For example: {{title}}, {{description}}, {{imageUrl}}

The maximum file size for sources is 2.5MB, and the server that hosts your file must accept HEAD requests. There is a limit of 50 items displayed in a Dynamic Asset. If you upload a file with more than 50 items, then make sure to use row filtering.

The text or name of the placeholder depends entirely on your source. If your source file looks something like the one below, the placeholder in your Asset will be replaced with its content when using this Asset in an Email draft.

So, {{title}} will be replaced with the hotel's name, {{description}} with the hotel's description, and {{imageUrl}} will become the Image Element's image URL.

Placeholders as Links

As mentioned above, placeholders can be used anywhere in the Email Canvas, including links.

While in the Element Options or the Inline Text Editor, simply expand the Link type and choose Feed Variable.

In the example Asset above, the BOOK NOW Button Element has been set up with {{url}} as a link! So, when this Asset is added into a draft, the placeholder is replaced with the URL from your source.

Click Preview in the Bottom bar to see how your Asset will be displayed in the email.

If you're working on a Dynamic Asset, you will still see the placeholders in the preview.

Once you add the Asset into the Canvas when creating an Email tool activity, you will be able to enter the source URL and work with the content that is fed into APSIS One.
